My name is Jonathan Waltner. I am a Portland, Oregon based graphic and web designer. I offer a wide range of freelance design services to Portland and beyond. I enjoy bringing new vitality to organizations through thoughtful and effective design. I am also going to give you some background into what makes me tick.
I only discovered my love of art and design while in my last two years at Willamette University. I had taken a wide range of classes in a smattering of disciplines and had never really noticed how my work, even as a child, always returned to the visual side of things. It all came together in the second semester of my sophomore year of college when, in desperation, I went to listen to a favorite professor of mine talk about his career journey. He handed out a very basic list of careers and the majors that would help you get into them.
The first page had art and anthropology related careers. I knew for a fact, after a less than exciting anthro class that I would not need to look over that list. The art list, however, was full of careers that I thought sounded pretty nice. My eyes stopped at graphic design, and I never even bothered to glance at the other eight pages. This may sound a little rushed and thoughtless, but it was love at first sight.
I switched my major to Studio Art (Willamette doesn’t offer Graphic Design as a major) and enrolled in every design, composition, and digital media class I could get involved in. I also acquired an amazing work study job with a group that did design for on-campus events. I also found outlets for my creative side in working closely with a club on campus that put on the year-end Music, Art, and Earth fesitval; Wulapalooza.
After graduation, I got a job at a bolt manufacturing company, and decided soon after, to enter the phase you find me in now. I am pretty good at what I do (I think) and will only be getting better (I hope). I encourage you to take a look at my past design projects, and to allow me to be part of your future design, or illustration project.
